Welcome to the BMT Community!

Chris and I met in the fall of 2006 while we were both working at Caribou Coffee on E. Stadium in Ann Arbor. We were both in the middle of huge life changes. In what has turned out to be one of the best and most rewarding decisions of our lives, we decided to combine our passion for massage and business and open Balance Massage Therapy in the fall of 2008.

We are putting our passion and skills into creating an experience that will be a part of your wellness plans for years to come.

Therapeutic massage doesn’t just have to be a treat, it can be incorporated into a wellness plan that fits into your active lifestyle, keeping you fit, healthy, and balanced.

Our goal is to bring affordable, accessible and adaptable massage to anyone and everyone. We strive to make massage affordable with our pricing strategies, accessible with our studio hours, and adaptable by taking a personal and active approach to each client’s wellness needs.

Great Therapeutic Massage Place…

This is a great therapeutic massage place. Before I came here, I had only ever gotten massages at spas, which sometimes are more about the experience than the massage itself.
Here, the tables are heated (nice touch) and the rooms are simple but clean. (The whole place is also nice and quiet, which I can’t say about some pricy spas I’ve been to before.) I went in for a hot stone massage with Angelica, which was very nice–love the heat from the stones–but it was the actual massage that I got along with the hot stone massage that really did it for me. I had a lower back injury that has had lasting effects on my mobility and still causes me problems here and there. I have tight knots that get worse when my back is acting up and they were almost completely gone when I left yesterday. I was very concerned about how rough the massage would be on that part of my back and my masseuse really was careful and gently worked the area to release the knots. Amazing. I would highly recommend this place, especially for people who really have muscle issues that need to be worked out. I’ll be back!

Things I love…atmosphere, service & price

After starting a nursing job, I wanted to be sure I was taking care of myself (my back included). This has a started love affair with full body massages at Balance. I’ve been twice so far, and am planning on making this an every 6wk tradition. I heard about Balance through word of mouth, and am now returning the favor!

Things I love:
-Atmosphere (beautifully decorated, quiet, spacious rooms, calming music)
-the heated massage tables (need I say more?)
-specials (ask about new client specials, happy hours, and hero discounts)
-the price (even at full price, $60 isn’t bad for a 1hr session)
-great customer service

I’ve seen Brendan and Jeff, and both were great. They ask about areas to focus on, and check in during the session about amounts of pressure, etc. I also introduced a friend from out of town to Balance, and she was also super impressed. A massage at Balance would be well worth a drive!

Great Prices & Convenient Location!

Great prices, a convenient location and wonderful therapists and staff make balance the best. I’ve been seeing Jeff weekly and it’s really improved my quality of life. Initially I felt a little guilty spending money on myself, but it’s really relieved my stress and some chronic pain issues that I had in my shoulders and legs.

Neck Stretches Video

On this video we cover the neck, and upper shoulders, and the muscles that are involved are the Upper Trapezius or Traps, and Levator Scapula.

The the Upper Trapezius muscle is responsible for the elevation and upward rotation of the
shoulder blade.

Trapezius:
The common causes for the Trapezius being overworked, or injured are: leaning your head forward for an extended period of time for example writing, computer use and working on a desk that it too high for you examples. Cold weather, carrying a heavy bag or purse, cradling of the telephone between your shoulder and neck, driving, riding a bike, and exercising are other common causes of the trapezius being overworked

How to stretch the traps

Lock & Lean
Gently grasp the side of your head while the other arm is behind your back. Tilt head away until you feel a good stretch. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds. Then repeat on the other side. The goal of this stretch is to help lengthen the trapezius muscle.

Levator Scapula:
The other muscle we are going to look at is the Levator Scapula. The Levator scapula is responsible for the elevation and downward rotation of the shoulder blade. It also assists the extension, and rotation of the neck to the side.

Common causes for the Levator being overworked, or injured are: looking sideways for a long
period of time, example is having a monitor off to one side or turning your head to watch the television. Cradling the telephone between the shoulders and neck, and falling asleep tilting your head backwards or to one side.

How to stretch the Levator

Hold & Lean
Place a hand on the shoulder blade, turn your head away from your hand towards the other
shoulder, and with other hand gently stretch head down towards your arm pit. Hold stretch for 20-30 secs. Repeat the other side.

Please remember that the goal these stretches is to feel release in the muscle, NOT to
push through any pain. Stretches should be slow and controlled movement. If you feel
pain when doing this stretch please stop immediately. Feel free to contact us by email

Hiring on behalf of our clients, we are looking for massage therapists who have experience with Swedish, Sports, Prenatal, Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular and Myofascial massage therapy.

We we have the systems in place to help you grow your practice within the walls and structure provided by Balance Massage Therapy.

We offer % based pay per massage, a comprehensive bonus plan including: quarterly retention bonuses, milestone and annual bonuses; BMT also offers ongoing internal training and $.25 continuing education credit per session.

Balance provides the marketing efforts, linens, and lotion. We also invest into our client service side and provide a front desk team who are embody Balance’s commitment to client service.

Our average therapist works 3.5 shifts each week, has 60 client sessions per month, makes an average of $110 per shift and receives a $325 quarterly retention bonus.

My parents owned a country store that was on the same property as our house. I always say I literally grew up in a business. My crib was just on the other side of the counter, and I was helped raised by a community of customers. Hickory Market taught me at an early age the importance of treating customers right. When my dad passed away in 2004, I moved back home to help my mom run our store. The community that my dad had spent a life time serving, took care of mom and me more than I could ever have imagined. With Balance, I look to build on those lessons and run a business that both realizes the importance of community and one that would make my dad proud.
